Is your Car Winter Ready?

On Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

The changing of the seasons is the perfect time to consider your car’s care and preparedness. You want to know you will be ready to face the weather changes and this is especially important as winter arrives. Here are Carpartkings tips to make sure your car is winter ready:

  • Semi-Annual Check: When October rolls around you should schedule a check with your mechanic. They will make sure your car is winter ready and they can address any issues that might leave you stranded.
  • Tyres: Tyres are your most important asset when driving in winter conditions. You want to be certain your tyres are ready to handle unexpected patches of ice as well as to handle well in snow. Depending on where you live and how often you drive you might want to consider getting winter tyres for extra safety.
  • Petrol: Winter requires a full tank of petrol as it is not the time to run on empty. First you don’t want to be stranded in the cold and second when your petrol is low you can actually allow your gas lines to freeze.
  • Brakes: As with your tyres, your brakes have to work and handle the cold. Unexpected ice can make you step on the brakes suddenly and knowing they will react the way you need them to is even more important in poor driving conditions.
  • Anti-freeze: Speak to your mechanic about your anti-freeze. You need to be certain you have the right mixture of coolant and anti-freeze in order to avoid issues with your motor. When in doubt your mechanic will know what to do.
  • Windshield Wipers: Winter weather is unpredictable and knowing your windshield wipers will work when you need them is important. Have the blades checked and also make sure you have the proper windshield wiper fluid that will not freeze when it hits your windshield.
  • Battery: Batteries over three years old should be checked in the fall. Batteries can be finicky in cold weather and knowing yours will be ready to work when you need it will make you feel safer. At the least be certain to have some jumper cables in your car just in case.
  • Oil: Be careful that you are driving with the right oil. The thicker the oil the more chance of issues especially in colder weather conditions. Again, your mechanic can do an oil check and change it if need be.
  • Emergency Ready: You do not want to be stranded on the side of the road in the winter. Because you cannot predict the future be certain you are ready for an unexpected breakdown or accident and keep the following items in your car for the winter:
    • A warm blanket
    • Winter wear including hat, boots, coat and gloves
    • Emergency food and drink
    • Flashlight
    • Shovel
    • Jumper cables
    • Flares or reflectors
    • Spare windshield wiper replacements
    • First aid kit (good for all seasons)
    • Sand, salt or kitty litter in case you get stuck in snow or on ice
    • Lots of temperature appropriate windshield washer fluid
    • Spare tire

These tips will keep you winter ready and safe to face the cold road ahead.
